Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List
Los Angeles Dodgers star pitcher, Walker Buehler, is headed back to the injured list due to right hip inflammation, a setback that has frustrated both him and the team. Buehler, a key figure in the Dodgers' rotation from 2018 to 2021, has been struggling to recapture his previous form after missing most of 2022 and all of 2023 due to his second Tommy John surgery.
From 2018 to 2021, Buehler was one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball, amassing 39 wins and never posting an ERA above 3.44. His exceptional performances made him a cornerstone of the Dodgers' pitching staff, but his return this season has been fraught with difficulties.
2024 Struggles After Comeback
Since his return on May 8, 2024, Buehler has struggled significantly, recording a 1-4 record with a 5.84 ERA over eight starts. His latest outing in Colorado further highlighted his challenges. In that game, Buehler took a line drive off the hip but continued to pitch, ultimately surrendering seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that Buehler's hip had been sore for several starts, and the decision was made to place him on the injured list to help him regroup both physically and mentally.
"I think he's sort of finding himself again," Roberts commented. "As he's getting back to health, I think for the mind and some clarity, this will be a good thing."
Buehler himself expressed his frustration, acknowledging the difficulty of feeling "invaluable" to his team. "At the end of the day, we really like our team, and I want to be ready for the end of the year. I'm going to do whatever I need to do to feel like I can help our team at the end of the year, and do everything in my power to be valuable enough to be on those rosters," he said.
Bobby Miller Activated
In a corresponding move, the Dodgers have activated pitcher Bobby Miller, who has been sidelined since April 10 due to right shoulder inflammation. Miller, now in his second major league season, has shown promise. This year, he has a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in three starts. Miller had an impressive rookie year in 2023, and his return to the mound adds much-needed depth to a Dodgers pitching staff that has been hit hard by injuries.
"Bobby has shown a lot of promise in his short time with us," Roberts noted. "His return will definitely help us manage the load more effectively."
Looking Forward
Despite his recent struggles, Buehler's career statistics remain impressive. Over seven seasons, he boasts a 47-20 record with a 3.17 ERA. The Dodgers are hopeful that rest and rehabilitation will allow Buehler to regain his top form. His perseverance and dedication continue to be an inspiration to his teammates and fans alike.
Injuries are an inevitable part of Major League Baseball, but the Dodgers have consistently demonstrated their ability to adapt and remain competitive. The activation of Bobby Miller is a testament to the organization's depth and flexibility. As Buehler works towards recovery, all eyes will be on his progress and eventual return to the rotation.
With aspirations of making a deep postseason run, the Dodgers are acutely aware of the importance of having their ace in top condition. As Dave Roberts succinctly put it, "This is about helping Walker get back to where he needs to be, both physically and mentally."
Buehler's resilience and commitment to the team’s future reflect his determination to overcome adversity. His journey back to the mound will undoubtedly be one of the more compelling storylines to follow as the season progresses.
