An Unlikely Path: Praise Olatoke’s Journey from Lagos to the NFL
In a tale that defies the conventional paths to the NFL, Praise Olatoke has emerged as a testament to determination, adaptability, and a touch of serendipity. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Olatoke relocated to Scotland at the tender age of five. His early years were infused with a passion for sport, initially channeling his energy into track. It was this athletic prowess that earned him a scholarship at Canada's Trinity Western University.
However, Olatoke’s journey took a pivotal turn in 2021 when he moved to Ohio State University. During his two seasons on the Buckeyes track team, an unfortunate setback arose—Olatoke suffered a torn Achilles tendon. This injury could have derailed any athlete’s career, but it instead acted as a springboard for Praise’s unlikely segue into American football.
Unlike the structured, fervent world of NCAA football, Olatoke’s introduction to the sport was through casual club football at Ohio State. Reflecting on this period, he remarked, "I never played NCAA football. The club football is just guys who come together to play football and enjoy a Saturday morning. That's really it. It might be 15, 20 people in a crowd. There could be 50. Who knows?"
Yet, this informal entry into the sport would set the stage for something greater. Despite not playing NCAA football, Olatoke exhibited formidable talent; he even caught a 65-yard touchdown pass against Michigan State, an impressive feat for any novice.
Recognizing his potential, Olatoke participated in the NFL International Player Pathway Program (IPPP), an initiative designed to provide international athletes the opportunity to play in the NFL. His skills caught the eye of scouts, leading to his training at IMG Academy.
His leap of faith began to pay dividends. Olatoke attended the Philadelphia Eagles' rookie minicamp, although it did not culminate in a selection. However, this minor setback was countered by interest from the Los Angeles Chargers. “A few weeks later, the Chargers reached out to me and said, 'Hey, we would be interested in bringing you out to our minicamp,'” Olatoke recalled. Despite some uncertainty—he even received just a one-way ticket—Olatoke's journey continued.
His perseverance paid off during the Chargers' minicamp. "On the last day -- which was a Thursday -- one of the staff said, 'Hey, you've got a meeting with the GM.' I walked in and saw the GM. There were a couple of other people there, and they basically said: 'We like you. We think we're going to take a chance on you, so if you're up for it and you're willing to work, we're going to sign you.'" Within hours, Olatoke was offered a contract, officially making him a Charger.
Olatoke’s story underscores the unpredictable nature of sports careers. As he put it, “I'm not going to deny that I got lucky to be in this situation. So many different dominoes had to fall my way.” Yet, he also highlighted the importance of creating one's own luck: “If you want it bad enough, I think you can always make things fall your way. You can create your own luck essentially.”
Now part of a franchise that finished last season with a 5-12 record, Olatoke joins fellow IPPP alumnus CJ Okoye in the Chargers' lineup. His transition from a casual football player to a professional athlete is a remarkable journey emblematic of resilience and opportunity.
While his path may have been unconventional, it’s clear that Praise Olatoke is ready to make his mark on the NFL. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Chargers, his story serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream beyond the expected, proving that with a blend of hard work, adaptability, and a bit of luck, anything is possible.
