Carolina Panthers Cement Their Future in Charlotte with $800M Stadium Renovation
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers are set to remain in Charlotte for the next two decades, thanks to a decisive vote by the Charlotte City Council. On Monday night, the council approved an $800 million stadium renovation plan that will ensure the Panthers stay at Bank of America Stadium through at least 2045.
City Council Approves Significant Investment
The decision came after a vote that saw the plan pass by a 7-3 margin, showcasing both strong support and some skepticism among council members. Under the terms of the agreement, the city will contribute $650 million toward the extensive renovation project, leveraging existing hospitality and tourism tax resources. Panthers' owner David Tepper will provide the remaining $150 million upfront and has also agreed to cover potential overages amounting to an estimated $421 million in additional capital improvements.
Tepper, who has already spent more than $117 million on previous stadium upgrades, emphasized the long-term benefits of this partnership. "For nearly 30 years, Charlotte has been the home of the Carolina Panthers and, more recently, Charlotte FC. We are proud to be in the Carolinas and look forward to delivering a venue that meets the needs of our community, players, and fans for years to come," Tepper said.
A Historic Venue in Need of Modern Updates
Bank of America Stadium, which has housed the Panthers since 1996, is considered one of the older stadiums in the NFL. Despite its age, the team’s management maintains that the 72,000-seat stadium has "good bones." Nevertheless, extensive renovations are necessary to bring the facility up to modern standards. The improvements, expected to be completed by 2029, include upgraded video and audio systems, modernized infrastructure, redesigned concourses, and unique social areas featuring skyline views.
Additional enhancements will feature new seating and improved accessibility throughout the stadium. Fans can also look forward to upgraded restrooms and exterior spaces designed for community gatherings and programming.
