Detroit Lions Welcome Back Jahmyr Gibbs
As the Detroit Lions gear up for the much-anticipated return of running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the team's optimism is palpable. Gibbs, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained earlier this month, is making strides in his recovery. Head coach Dan Campbell has expressed a positive outlook regarding Gibbs' progress and potential availability for the Lions' Week 1 clash against the Los Angeles Rams.
“Our plan is to get him going next week,” Campbell noted, indicating that the running back's return is imminent. The team's medical staff has reported that Gibbs is "trending the right way" in terms of his recovery, further solidifying hopes for a strong start to the season.
Gibbs' injury occurred during a practice session, disrupting his preparations for the upcoming season. Despite the setback, there is a shared sentiment among the coaching staff that Gibbs' health is improving on schedule. “Wish we had more practice with him,” Campbell lamented, "but as far as the health of it, he’s healing and he’s on schedule to be back, and get his legs back under him. And we’ll see where he’s at."
The enthusiasm for Gibbs' return is not unfounded. In his debut season, Gibbs showcased his talent with impressive statistics—racking up 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries. These figures ranked him second on the team in rushing yards, touchdowns, and carries. His contributions extended to the air game as well, with 52 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown.
During the playoffs, Gibbs continued to be a key player for the Lions. He added 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, complemented by 94 yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions. His impact on the team’s offensive strategy cannot be overstated.
Preparing for the Steelers
As the Lions prepare for their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, scheduled for Saturday, they are also anticipating the return of several other key players. The list of potential returnees includes tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and defensive lineman DJ Reader.
"So, we’re about to get a whole group of guys back, hopefully Sunday,” Campbell stated. “And then they'll get next week's practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice. So, Gibbs falls into that boat."
The Lions’ final preseason game against the Steelers will serve as a crucial test for those returning from injuries. Campbell and his coaching staff are keen to evaluate how these players integrate back into the team and contribute to the rigorous preparation week leading up to the season opener against the Rams.
“We're hoping the day after [this Saturday’s preseason finale against the Steelers], I think we’re going to get a lot of guys back,” Campbell added, underscoring the importance of having a fully healthy roster to face the challenges of the upcoming season.
With Gibbs and several other players on the mend, the Lions are looking forward to starting the season at full strength. There remains a cautious optimism within the team, aimed at leveraging the preseason to fine-tune strategies and ensure that key players are in peak condition for the rigorous demands of the NFL season.
As the Lions march towards their opening game, all eyes will be on Gibbs and his counterparts to see how well they can bounce back from their injuries and solidify their roles in the team’s offensive and defensive line-ups. The upcoming practices and final preseason game will be pivotal in setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting season for Detroit fans.
