Jason Wright to Transition to Senior Adviser Role with Commanders After 2024 Season
In a notable development for the Washington Commanders, Jason Wright will transition from his current role as team president following the 2024 season. Wright, who has held this position since 2020, will assume a new role as a senior adviser, where his primary focus will be to ensure the successful completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal.
A Transformative Leadership Tenure
Wright’s tenure with the Commanders has notably coincided with significant changes within the organization. He took the helm in 2020 when the team was still known as the Washington Football Team. In 2022, under Wright's leadership, the team rebranded to the Washington Commanders, a move that marked a new era for the franchise.
Reflecting on his tenure, Wright expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved over the past four years. "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it," Wright said.
Organizational Milestones and Community Engagement
Wright’s leadership period also coincided with a significant change in ownership, as the franchise transitioned from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris. This change brought renewed optimism and promise for the future of the Commanders. Building on this momentum, the organization has seen a resurgence in fan engagement, welcoming record numbers of fans back to the stadium. Corporate partnerships were revitalized, and efforts to reconnect with the community were notably strengthened.
"We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership," Wright noted. "Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization."
Looking Forward
Jason Wright’s historical appointment as the first Black president of an NFL team and only the fourth former player to hold such a position underscores the breaking of significant barriers in the league. His upcoming transition will see him focus on one of the most critical aspects of the franchise's future—the new stadium deal.
While he is set to remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, Wright will also explore new leadership opportunities. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," he said.
As Wright prepares to embark on the next phase of his professional journey, he remains a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers. "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold," Wright shared.
Jason Wright's time with the Commanders has been marked by significant transformations and achievements that have positioned the team for future success. As he transitions to his new role and possibly takes on broader responsibilities in the NFL, his impact on the Commanders and the legacy he leaves behind will be long remembered.
