Mekhi Becton's Transition to the Eagles' Offensive Line
In May, Mekhi Becton signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, bringing a new dynamic to the team's offensive line. Initially tapped as a backup for key tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton has swiftly adapted to additional roles, showcasing his versatility and readiness.
Though Becton was expected to play primarily at tackle, the Eagles had plans for him to contribute as a guard. This transition hasn't been without its challenges, particularly given Becton's history of injuries and inconsistent performance with the New York Jets. Becton's journey to the interior line hasn't been straightforward. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," Becton shared, highlighting his willingness to embrace change. The significant difference in gameplay between tackle and guard positions is not lost on him. "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away," he explained.
Despite the fast-paced demands of playing guard, Becton remains confident. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he said, underscoring his focused and team-oriented mindset. His physical attributes, particularly his impressive arm length, provide an advantage over typical defensive tackles. "I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," Becton noted.
During training camp, Becton has been competing with Tyler Steen for the starting right guard spot, although he has yet to play at that position. The weeks ahead, marked by rigorous training and preseason games, will be crucial in testing Becton's ability to adjust and perform under pressure. With a spot at guard still open, Becton has the first call to fill any voids that may arise.
Becton's practical mindset and preparedness have been evident. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready," he remarked, showcasing his dedication to contribute whenever required. His approach to learning and growing within the team is similarly positive. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do," he said.
As the Eagles proceed with their preparations for the upcoming season, Becton's adaptability and readiness to step up in various roles will be closely watched. The coming weeks will ultimately determine his role within the team, but one thing is clear: Becton is committed to being a valuable asset. "I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," he affirmed.
