Veterans from the 2008 NFL Draft

The 2008 NFL Draft produced several players who continue to make an impact in the league. Among them, Joe Flacco, Josh Johnson, and Calais Campbell remain actively involved on the field, showcasing both their longevity and skill.

Joe Flacco: The Comeback Kid

Joe Flacco is having a remarkable comeback in 2023, earning the title of NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Known for his cool demeanor and strong arm, Flacco currently commands the offense of the Indianapolis Colts as their quarterback. His return to form has been a testament to his resilience and determination, making him a valuable asset to his team.

Josh Johnson: A Steady Hand in Baltimore

Josh Johnson has carved out a unique niche in the NFL, having played for multiple teams throughout his career. Currently, he dons the quarterback jersey for the Baltimore Ravens. Johnson's journey through the league is a tale of persistence and adaptability, proving that a steady hand behind the center is always in demand.

Calais Campbell: A Veteran for the Dolphins

Calais Campbell, renowned for his defensive prowess, is now a key player for the Miami Dolphins. With six Pro Bowl appearances and a spot on the 2010s All-Decade team, Campbell’s impact on the field is undisputed.

In 2023, Campbell enjoyed a productive season with the Atlanta Falcons, starting all 17 games. His stat line was impressive, with 6.5 sacks, 56 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback pressures. These numbers underscore his continuing influence on the defensive side of the ball and his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.

The Decision to Continue

As Campbell considered retirement, it was his love for the game that ultimately influenced his decision to return for another season. Conversations with his family were crucial in this process. "I thought about [retiring]," Campbell shared. "It really came down to just with the family, talking to the wife and kids. Because physically, and the desire and love for the game, has never left, not even a little bit."

Acknowledging the evolution in his game due to age, Campbell emphasized the importance of adapting his style. "I have to learn how to use other parts of my game, bring a lot more of the strength part but I still have enough finesse and everything else, I got a full box of little tools," he noted. "But what keeps me going though is a love for the game."

A New Opportunity with the Dolphins

Campbell joined the Miami Dolphins with aspirations of chasing a Super Bowl ring. He sees significant potential in the Dolphins' roster, which includes six Pro Bowl players and several new additions that further strengthen the team. "I feel like there's a really good opportunity here. Very talented team all over the field, both offense and defense," Campbell remarked. "When you go through the roster and who you have, I just see so many people that I feel like we can really play together and really build that team chemistry you need and be a force to reckon with."

Reuniting with Anthony Weaver

Another factor in Campbell's decision was reuniting with coach Anthony Weaver, who served as Campbell’s position coach for two seasons. "The main reason I wanted to come here was because I really believe in who Anthony Weaver is as a coach and our relationship," Campbell explained. "We talked a lot during the process, and he knows what I'm capable of doing. He understands my mind and how I see the game, and he trusts it."

The Pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy

With all his accolades, one thing still eludes Campbell: a Super Bowl title. He got close in Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals but did not clinch the victory. Now, with the Dolphins, Campbell's goal remains clear: to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy and add a Super Bowl title to his illustrious career. His drive and dedication speak volumes about his character and passion for the game.

"What keeps me going though is a love for the game," Campbell reiterated, encapsulating the spirit that has carried him through an impressive NFL career.

As the 2023 season unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Campbell and the Dolphins can capitalize on their potential and take the final step towards NFL glory.
