Matt Riddle Teases MMA Comeback in 2024

Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024

Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestler Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts in 2024. At 37, Riddle's athletic career has spanned various combat sports, showcasing his versatility and passion for competition.

Exploring New Opportunities

Riddle's journey back into the MMA ring or cage seems to be more than just idle speculation. In conversations with MMA Junkie, he revealed ongoing discussions with several promotions, though he remained tight-lipped about the specifics. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle stated, adding, "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Riddle could be entertaining offers from the world of bare-knuckle fighting as well as from the Professional Fighters League (PFL), indicating a broad spectrum of interest in his return to combat sports.

A Controversial Past and a Promising Future

Riddle's last foray into MMA occurred in February 2014 when he faced Michael Kuiper under the Titan FC banner. Before transitioning to professional wrestling, he left the UFC on a four-fight winning streak after a victory over Che Mills in 2013. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which subsequently led to criticism from UFC President Dana White.

Despite the rocky end to his tenure with the UFC, Riddle acknowledges the impact White's public disapproval had on his career trajectory. "I have to thank Dana because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," Riddle reflected. He credits the incident with helping to shape his 'bro' persona, which has resonated with fans across both MMA and professional wrestling audiences.

As a free agent, Riddle has kept his options open, suggesting a willingness to mend fences if the right opportunity presents itself. "I never say never," he remarked. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge."

From the Octagon to the Ring

After departing from MMA, Riddle embarked on a new path in professional wrestling. He began training in 2014 and made his debut the following year. His natural charisma and athletic prowess quickly propelled him through the ranks of various independent promotions where he claimed several titles.

In 2018, Riddle's career took a significant leap forward as he joined WWE NXT, capturing the NXT Tag Team Championship with Pete Dunne. His success continued on the main roster, where he secured the United States Championship in February 2021. Alongside Randy Orton, Riddle formed the popular tag team "RK-Bro," going on to win the Raw Tag Team Championship twice.

Despite his achievements in professional wrestling, Riddle has maintained his roots in martial arts, practicing multiple times a week and holding a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His presence at high-profile combat sports events, such as the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, underscores his enduring connection to the fight community.

The Road Ahead

Riddle's potential return to MMA is not just about rekindling an old flame; it's also about closure. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he said. The transition, while successful, left a chapter in his life unfinished. Riddle expressed a desire to test himself once again in the realm of MMA, stating, "Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"

Whether Riddle's future involves stepping back into the cage or continuing to entertain crowds in the squared circle, one thing is clear: his competitive spirit remains unquenched. As 2024 approaches, fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see where this multifaceted athlete's journey takes him next.
